OK - blog is up. Can't wait to hear from everyone. I"m pumped for all of you. God is already at work in just a few of the stories I've heard. Biggest thing - remember, this is a time to REDIRECT OUR APPETITES HEAVENWARD and pursue God. One of the ways we kicked it off was last night before bed time we gathered as a family in our living room, prayed together, talked about the fast and what each of us we're seeking God for - it was cool to see the kids...yes, there's is some 'kicking and screaming', but also there is a piqued desire and interest to take a risk and so something they've never done before to connect with God. So discuss, talk about it together, and pray together.
Between the grocery store and my cell phone last night...it's time for a little "Fast Shopping 101."
1) Relax - you will have plenty to eat after the 24 hour liquid fast. I ran into someone who had been through the entire store and only had 5-6 items in their cart. I was in the checkout w' cart overflowing...So, what do you buy?
2) Shop outside aisles...I do a lot of shopping at Ingles and Publix - basically, you go around the outside aisles where the fresh fruit and veggies hang out - yummy...you'll find most of the stuff (the "hemdas" - processed, not natural, sugar, bread, etc) hang out in the aisles.
3) Check out the Foods to Eat, Foods to Avoid list in your "21 day Dangerous Guide" - this will get you started and then share with us some of your creative recipes...CHECK my 2nd post "CREATIVE RECIPES" for more ideas.
4) Breakfast 101 - the kids have 3 choices to begin with (more will come soon, but keep it simple). Option 1 - Banana/Strawberry Smoothie w' some whey protein powder and orange juice and honey - get in my belly. (actually any kind of smoothie - adding blueberries to the above makes it exciting) Option 2 - Fresh Fruit - a delicious combo of kiwi, tangerines/oranges, bananas, strawberries, and apples - go for it...be creative, pick your fav 5 fruits. Option 3 - heart healthy warm bool of oatmeal w' bananas/raisins, cinnamon, honey, and soy milk - BAM!!
5) Smoothy Hint - freeze your fruit and add some ice...frozen fruit is the trick to a nicely blended smoothie...Sam's has big bags of strawberries, blueberries, and mixed fruits in their freezer section ready to go.

B - great question...You're absolutely right on the 'Milk" content. I'm learning lots too. Since Whey Protein is a Dairy product and a daily part of my morning Fruit Smoothie routine, I'm searching for some Soy Protein options to use instead. Let me know if you find any...

I made a smoothie this morning unsweetened soy milk, ice, peanut butter, a banana, and a little cinnamon. It was great! Just throw all the stuff into a blender and go. Using soy milk and ice may be a good alternative for the morning smoothie with some protein.... or even as a dessert! |
